Amongst the most ancient temples in Andhra Pradesh, the Mahanandi Temple dates back to almost 1500 years. Nevertheless, there are several inscriptions that state that this temple was rebuilt and repaired a numerous times. Famous for its Pushkarni or fresh water pools, the architecture and sculptural works of this temple and its pools are believed to be constructed by the Vishwakarma Brahmins.

Surrounded by three pools, the temple has one big pool inside the temple and two small at the entrances. There is a rather interesting feature about the water source of this temple; the water here is in continuous flow irrespective of the season. This water is famous for its healing and crystalline properties, the source is believed to be from the inner sanctum right below the Linga.
