Yaganti Venkateshwara Temple Cave

Another one of the magnificent examples of the Vijayanagar Temple architecture, this magnificent temple was in fact built by the founders of the mighty Vijayanagara dynasty Harihara Bukka Rayalu in the 15th century. It is interesting to note here that the temple was built according to Vaishnavaite traditions.  There are numerous legends that support this theory, it is said that in the location of the current temple’s site the sage Agastya wanted to built a temple for lord Venkateshwara, unfortunately, the toe nail of the idol was broken and the statue could not be installed in the temple.

Upset over the incident, Agastya is believed to have propitiated to Lord Shiva, it is said that Lord Shiva himself said that the place suits him better as it resembled Kailash, and thus a temple for Lord Shiva was constructed in the destination.  Another anecdote states that a devotee of Lord Shiva, Chitteppa worshipped Shiva and then the lord appeared to him as a tiger, and in his joy he shouted – Neganti Shivanu Kanti, there even is a cave called Chitteppa nearby.

There is a Pushkarni or a small pond on the temple premises, it is said that water flows into this pond from the bottom of a hill from the mouth of Nandi himself. No individual till date knows how the water even reaches the pond. It is said that sage Agastya himself bathed himself in this pond before propitiating Lord Shiva. There is a cave in the reason where Sage Agastya performed his penances, there are 120 steps to the entrance of this cave. The idol of Lord Venkateshwara too is present in this very cave.

The temple is surrounded by numerous scenic destinations and places of natural beauty. There also is a belief that the idol of Nandi, the sacred Bull is growing. There is a belief that at the end of the Kali Yuga this statue of the Basavanna will rise and shout.
